Levels of deprivation have fallen in all neighbourhoods across the city region, in absolute terms. The report highlights that there has been an increase in access to better public services and a fall in crime across all neighbourhoods.
However, some neighbourhoods have seen living standards improve at a faster rate than others.
Policy development needs to take account of neighbourhoods, rather than focusing on borough or city-wide initiatives.
The findings show that a north-south divide to understanding deprivation and unemployment is too simplistic as pockets of higher levels of deprivation and unemployment exist across all parts of the city region.
The report establishes a new typology for categorising deprived neighbourhoods. These four categories (Isolate, Gentrifier, Escalator and Transit) each demonstrate different attributes which will shape the level and need for policy intervention to tackle the underlying factors responsible for continuing levels of deprivation.
